For anyone dipping their toes in the water with affiliate marketing they will soon discover how much there is to learn. This can sometimes put people off who give up before they have even got started.
The information provided here is to make life a lot easier by explaining some of the jargon that you will encounter. Understanding the jargon will save you a lot of time.
Instead of spending time searching for the meanings of certain acronyms, you will be able to spend that time doing something more constructive, like building your business. Time is a very precious commodity and ‘Time is Money’.
This list is not exhaustive by any means but highlights some of the more common terms and acronyms you are likely to encounter when starting out.
AdWords - is Google’s Pay Per Click program.
Affiliate - a 3rd party promotion partner that is purely paid on the results that they generate.
B2B – Business to Business. Businesses that sell products or provides services to other businesses.
B2C – Business to Consumer. Businesses that sell products or provides services to the consumers.
CJ - Commission Junction ®
CR - Conversion Rate/Ratio. This is the percentage of the readers or visitors that make a purchase or have subscribed to a newsletter.
CTR - Click Through Rate. The click through rate or ratio is the percentage of visitors who click on a particular link.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions. Nearly always found on a title page of a website and provides answers to the most commonly asked questions related to that site.
FTP – File Transfer Protocol. It is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. It is the transfer of files from one computer to another over a network.
IM - Internet Marketing
JV – Joint Venture
HTML - Hyper-Text Mark-Up Language - The code that makes a web-site work.
HTTP – Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. The underlying protocol that tells the web site host what pages to send to the viewer.
Payment Threshold - The minimum amount of commission earned before payment is made.
PLR - Private Label Rights - A common type of articles, templates and ebooks in which you may use and edit the content but you may not sell or claim full copyright.
PPA - Pay Per Action
PPC - Pay Per Click
ROI - Return On Investment. The amount of profit made after deductions of advertising and other costs. It’s a measure of the success of a business in relation to the returns on the money that’s been spent.
SEO - Search Engine Optimization. The process of choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a site, in an attempt to ensure that the site ranks well with search engines when those keyword phrases are part of a Web search.
SEP – Search Engine Positioning. This is similar to SEO and is getting your page listed on the search engine results page.
SERP – Search Engine Results Page. The page of listings displayed upon completion of a search at a search engine.
TOS - Terms of Service. The rules and guidelines of a website.
URL – Uniform Resource Locator. The full website address of a given page ie. http://www.websitename.com
USP - Unique Selling Position. What makes you different or special and makes you stand out from your competition. The unique benefits that you or your products provide in order to attract more visitors.
WWW – World Wide Web. You should know this one J. If not – get reading!
These are just a few on the many acronyms and phrases that you are likely to come across when you start out in Internet Marketing and Affiliate Marketing.
